Researchers from the Institute participated in the International Scientific and Practical Conference «40 Years Since the Chernobyl Disaster: Consequences, Challenges, and Threats»
Scientists from the State Institution «Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine» participated in the International Scientific and Practical Conference «40 Years Since the Chernobyl Disaster: Consequences, Challenges, and Threats,» held in Kyiv on April 25–26, 2026, under the patronage of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. The conference brought together leading domestic scientists, representatives of the medical community, and international partners for a substantive scientific discussion of the long-term consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and current challenges in the field of radiation safety.
The plenary presentation by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Igor SHKROBANETS, and Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Olena TUROS, on the topic: «The experience of the Chernobyl accident in the context of contemporary challenges in preventive medicine» clearly demonstrated the Institute’s significant experience and potential from the moment of the accident through to the mitigation of its consequences.
In fact, the Institute’s Laboratory of Radiation Hygiene was the only unit in Ukraine capable of measuring the level of radioactive contamination and assessing the events that had occurred. In the first months following the accident, the Institute’s specialists worked around the clock to receive, process, and carry out measurements of samples of water, soil, plants, food products, and raw materials.
Based on the scientific research carried out, the Institute’s specialists developed and implemented the methodological guidelines «Assessment of the Radiation Situation in the Environment», which remain relevant and essential for practical work today, especially given the current challenges facing preventive medicine.
Also speaking at the conference on behalf of the Institute were:
- Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Tetiana PAVLENKO, with a presentation titled «Radiation doses to the population in the context of the current radiation situation»;
- and Doctor of Biological Sciences Mykhailo BUZINNYI, who presented two reports to the conference participants:
- «Cohort studies of daily intake of Cesium-137 by residents of the village of Narodychi» and
- «Study of the impact of forest fires on groundwater contamination in the vicinity of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant».
We sincerely thank the organizers, speakers, and participants of the conference – a true scientific platform for in-depth and substantive discussion among scientists, practicing physicians, bioengineers, and representatives of the security sector.
