☢️April 26 – Chornobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster – a tragedy that ranks among the most catastrophic man-made accidents in human history.
We honor the memory of those who died and pay deep respect to the liquidators, medical workers, and scientists – all those who, in the first days and years after the accident, stood up to protect people’s lives and health.
For the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Chornobyl is not just a page in history. It represents decades of scientific research, clinical work, and daily assistance to those affected. It was the specialists from the institutions of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine who were at the forefront of establishing the medical support system and who continue this work today.
The consequences of the disaster remain relevant even 40 years later – both in medical and social terms. The experience of Chornobyl is important for the entire world – as a reminder of the responsibility and cost of man-made decisions.
We bow our heads in memory of the victims of the Chornobyl disaster.
We express our gratitude to all who have dedicated their lives to serving others.
✍️Sincerely,
President of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine
Academician of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine
Vasyl Lazoryshynets
Presidium of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine
