Master Class for Future Doctors: From Theory to Practice in Microbiology at the SI «IPH NAMSU» Laboratory of Sanitary Microbiology and Disinfection, and Museum of Microorganism Test Strains

On April 13, 2026, students from the Kyiv Medical University, as part of the educational component «Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology,» visited the Laboratory of Sanitary Microbiology and Disinfection, and Museum of Microorganism Test Strains at the State Institution «Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.»

The scientific and educational tour and practical workshop for the students were carried out by the Head of the Laboratory, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Olena Surmasheva.

The visit began with a safety briefing regarding safety procedures while in the laboratory. Afterward, the students were introduced to modern laboratory equipment and current research methods.

The students were told about the main areas of the laboratory’s work, including the specifics of storing dry culture media, their components, sterilization indicators, and the processes for preparing culture media. The tour concluded with a visit to the museum, where test strains of microorganisms are stored.

The practical component consisted of a workshop where students practiced pathogen identification algorithms using the Gram staining technique as an example. Students practiced differential staining techniques using the identification of staphylococci, specifically Staphylococcus aureus, which is critically important for clinical practice.

To conclude the scientific and educational meeting, students had the opportunity to discuss with experts and receive professional answers to relevant questions.

The Institute’s experts are always ready for new meetings with future doctors and other public health professionals.
