Information about on the work of a scientific-practical conference with international participation “Current Issues of Public Health and Environmental Safety of Ukraine” (19 Marzieiev readings).

On October 19, 2023, at the State Institution “OM Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (NAMSU)” was held scientific and practical conference with international participation “ACTUAL ISSUES OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY OF UKRAINE” (XIX Marzieiev readings).

This year, the conference is dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of O.M. Marzieiev – an outstanding scientist, the founder of the Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Ukraine, the founder of the first scientific research institute of communal hygiene in Ukraine, whose name is proudly and honorably borne by the Institute for Public Health, continuing to develop his ideas in the field of public health.

The conference participants were congratulated by Ihor Lurin, Vice-president of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Francesca Racioppi, Head of Office, European Centre for Environment and Health World Health Organization, Bonn, Germany and Jarno Habicht, head of the WHO office in Ukraine.

About 460 participants took part in the conference – the country’s leading scientists, university teachers, doctors, chemists, biologists, ecologists, physicists, pharmacologists, and specialists of other professions from almost all regions of Ukraine. Among the participants of the conference were representatives of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, scientific and practical institutions of health care of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, the State Production and Consumer Service of Ukraine.

The work of the conference began with a plenary session, which was attended by all participants of the conference and 9 reports were presented.

The Director of the Institute, Nadiia Polka, gave a presentation “The ideas of OM Marzieiev – founder of the sanitary business in the scientific activity of the State Institution “OM Marzieiev of the National Academy of Medical Sciences”.

The report “STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS OF WORK OF THE STATE INSTITUTION “IPH NAMSU” IN THE RECOVERY OF UKRAINE” was presented by the deputy director of scientific work of the National Academy of Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor Olena Turos.

The report “Biological safety of research laboratories when working with microorganisms” was delivered by the deputy director of scientific and practical work of the IPH, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Mykhailo Rosada.

The report “WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THE DOMESTIC PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM?” made the head of the Department of Public Health and Physical Education, head of the NDC “Human Ecology and Public Health Protection” of the Ostroh Academy National University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor Ihor Guschuk.

Report “Peculiarities of eating disorders in children in Ukraine during the war” was presented Professor Mariia Gulich, head of the laboratory for the prevention of food-dependent diseases of the “OM Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” in co-authorship with specialists of the University of Helsinki, Finland.

Very interesting and important for us were 4 presentations from foreign guests.

The report «Main outcomes of the seventh Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health» have been presented to the Francesca Racioppi – Head of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, European Center for Environment and Health, Bonn, Germany.

Dr. Elizabeth Paunovic, member of the International Association of Partnerships for Health Care, Belgrade, Serbia, made presentation “The importance of health system strengthening to respond climate change challenges”.

Presentation “Random glucose – from measurement to genetics, type 2 diabetes complications and treatment stratification” was made Professor Inga Prokopenko, Vice Chancellor’s Distinguished Chair; Co-Director of AI institute, Professor of e-One Health; Head of Section of Statistical Multi-Omics; Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. School of Biosciences and Medicine, University of Surrey / United Kingdom.

Dr. Shinzo Kimura, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Hygiene and International Epidemiology. Dokkyo Medical University, Japan made presentation “Problems with the assessment of the incidence of thyroid cancer in Fukushima prefecture in the 2020 UNSCEAR report”.

The conference continued its work in two sections: “Intersection and Interdisciplinary Cooperation in the Field of Public Health, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change” (16 reports were heard) and “Modern Challenges in the Public Health System” (14 reports were heard).

The main reports were devoted to the priority directions of modern preventive medicine, issues related to the solution of environmental problems and its impact on the health of the population in modern conditions, and the issue of the impact of the consequences of war on ecology and the outline of directions of scientific activity for the recovery of Ukraine were especially emphasized, namely:

  • on the development of the national health care system as a whole and the further development of the public health system;
  • environmental and health issues, response to climate change problems; estimates of damage to the health of the population from the impact of environmental factors in the conditions of military operations;
  • assessments of nuclear and radiation threats during wartime, issues of radon safety in shelters;
  • the issue of creating a safe environment for the population of residential and public buildings in the conditions of martial law;
  • issues of military hygiene;
  • ecological and hygienic aspects of waste management;
  • analysis of health problems, including psychological health during the war, psycho-hygiene;
  • the urgency of revising the hygienic standards for carcinogenic substances;
  • problems of the environmental situation at industrial facilities;
  • the issue of restoration of Ukraine;
  • modern approaches to standardization of dietary supplements;
  • peculiarities of eating disorders in children during the war;
  • problems of genetic diseases;
  • biological safety;
  • estimates of cancer incidence;
  • regarding the problems of water quality and its purification, disinfection, including during war and emergency conditions.
