Laboratory of Surface Water Safety
The Laboratory of Surface Water Safety was established in 2024. Before that, water problems at the Institute were studied only in the Laboratory of Natural and Drinking Water Hygiene.
Head of the Laboratory – Doctor of Biological Sciences in the specialty “Hygiene and Occupational Pathology” and Senior Researcher, Head of the Academic Integrity Commission of the SI “IPH NAMSU,” international project expert Olesia Zorina (ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1557-8521)

Main directions of scientific activity:
Scientific principles of hygienic safety of water use. Development of scientifically based measures to prevent and eliminate the impact of hazardous factors of the water environment on human health. Scientific substantiation of approaches, products, and technologies to preserve or improve water composition. Scientific support for implementing innovative technologies to minimize the negative impact of the water factor on human health and the integrated state information system on the state of water in Ukraine. Analysis of the effectiveness of water and sanitation measures to prevent the emergence and spread of infectious and non-communicable diseases. Development of algorithms for making managerial decisions in public health to ensure sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population and eliminate risks to human health due to the water factor, particularly in martial law and other emergencies. Scientific substantiation and development of proposals for improving strategic directions, legislative and regulatory framework for implementing European water legislation in Ukraine and preserving human life and health.
The most significant scientific achievements:
The Laboratory’s specialists have participated in scientific research, the results of which have been published:
- current issues in the field of surface water protection;
- the state of the Dnipro River and the main approaches to its water treatment at water supply stations in the current conditions;
- hygienic assessment of the main approaches to the use of chlorine dioxide at water supply plants in Ukraine with surface sources of drinking water supply;
- development of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Standards for drinking water quality in “peace” and “martial law.”
Based on the research carried out, proposals to the orders of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine were prepared to implement the requirements of European water legislation:
- On approval of hygienic standards of water quality for bathing;
- On Approval of Amendments to the State Sanitary Norms and Rules “Hygienic Requirements for Drinking Water Intended for Human Consumption” and Amendments to the State Sanitary Norms and Rules “Safety Indicators and Certain Indicators of Drinking Water Quality in Martial Law and Other Emergency Situations.”
