The roundtable was also attended by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Mariia Hulich, Head of the Laboratory of Nutrition Hygiene and Safety of Food Products of the State Institution «Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.» She focused on the issue of regulatory support of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on the organization of nutrition for cancer patients and emphasized that nutrition for cancer patients in medical institutions of any subordination is carried out in accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine of October 29, 2013, No. 931 «The Procedure for Organizing the System of Medical Nutrition for Patients in Healthcare Facilities.» It provides for 5 norms of therapeutic nutrition, including for cancer patients, which are calculated solely depending on the patient’s initial normo-, hypo- or hypertrophic state.

Mariia Hulich spoke about the need to revise and supplement the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine No. 931 on nutrition for cancer patients. In her opinion, when developing the norms of therapeutic nutrition for cancer patients, it is necessary to take into account not only the trophic state of the patient. First of all, it is necessary to take into account such issues as the localization of the tumor, as well as the stages of treatment: preoperative, postoperative, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. According to the speaker, the norm of therapeutic nutrition for a cancer patient must be modified in accordance with the localization of the tumor and the stage of treatment. In each case, it should even be about individualized nutrition of the patient. In the final part of the report, Mariia Hulich noted the need for an integrated approach to solving this issue and close cooperation between oncologists, hygienists, nutritionists and food technologists in the production of food products for special medical purposes and health food. This proposal was positively received and had a great response from the participants of the roundtable on the further development of a regulatory document on medical nutrition for cancer patients.
