Greetings to our colleagues. The 12th Amosov Readings were held to mark the 112th anniversary of M. M. Amosov
On December 5, 2025, the XII Amosov Readings were held, dedicated to the 112th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding surgeon Mykola Amosov. The event has been held annually since 2013 with the participation of leading Ukrainian and foreign specialists to honor the memory of Mykola Mikhailovich.
Representatives of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine took part in the readings: First Vice President Academician Oleksandr Usenko, Vice Presidents Academicians Serhii Vozianov and Ihor Lurin, as well as Acting Chief Scientific Secretary, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Prof. Nataliia Medvedovska.
This year’s meeting was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Mykola Amosov’s first operation, which marked the beginning of modern Ukrainian cardiac surgery. Mykola Amosov opened Ukraine’s first specialized cardiac surgery clinic at the 24th City Hospital in Kyiv. The building where Amosov performed the operation has been in disrepair for more than a quarter of a century, but the lamp that lit the first historic surgery still remains in the operating room.
The report by Vasyl Lazoryshynets, Director of the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, was devoted to the integration of state institutions of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine into the Medical Guarantees Program and the challenges they faced. The academician emphasized that the institutions of the National Academy of Medical Sciences perform a critically important function – they provide the most complex high-tech interventions that ordinary hospitals cannot perform. He stressed that the current financing conditions, legal restrictions, and low tariffs of the National Health Service of Ukraine do not meet the real needs of the institutions and jeopardize the quality of care, especially for the military. Despite outdated equipment and a significant staff shortage, NAMSU’s institutions have treated hundreds of thousands of patients. The report outlined the need for systemic changes – a review of funding, support for high-tech interventions, and the creation of a long-term development strategy for NAMSU’s institutions.
The event also featured speeches by: Valery Savitsky, Head of the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy, Brigadier General of the Medical Service; Vyacheslav Osauhlenko, Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital; Serhii Rudenko, Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at the M. I. Pirogov Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital.
During the event, Academician Vasyl Lazoryshynets presented a medal from the President of Ukraine to the Medical Director of the Clinic, Olga Unitska, on the occasion of her being awarded the honorary title of “Honored Doctor of Ukraine.”
Traditionally, during the readings, the M. M. Amosov Medal was awarded. This year’s laureates were:
- Valery Savitsky, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy, Brigadier General of the Medical Service;
