On October 24-25, 2024, the State Institution «Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine» held a scientific and practical conference with international participation “Current Issues of Public Health and Environmental Safety of Ukraine” (the twentieth Marzieiev Readings). For 20 years in a row, the conference has been called “Marzieiev Readings,” following the traditions established by Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, Professor Andriy Serdyuk in 2004 in honor of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the Institute, Olexander Marzieiev. Despite the martial law, constant shelling, and losses among civilians and soldiers – our defenders, every year, the scientific community of Ukraine gathers together to discuss current trends in the development of the public health system, the scientific and educational process, and practical medicine. They discuss new areas of scientific research, share their experience, and highlight the issues that must be addressed in a united manner.
The conference was held online using Zoom. Experts from all over Ukraine, as well as foreign partners and scholars, took part. The conference can also be viewed on the Institute’s YouTube and Facebook channels.
The conference topics, which are updated annually, attract considerable attention of scientists and practitioners in public health, hygiene, and medical ecology, as evidenced by the statistics of the event:
- 673 participants registered and took part in the two-day conference;
- The audience consisted of prominent international experts, leading scientists of the country, university professors, employees of the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, doctors, chemists, biologists, ecologists, physicists, pharmacologists, and other professionals from almost all regions of Ukraine.
Representatives of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the World Health Organization in Ukraine, the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, scientific and practical healthcare institutions of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection attended the conference.
Representatives from Germany, Italy, Serbia, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Moldova were among the foreign partners.
The conference began with a minute of silence. The memory of the fallen defenders of Ukraine was honored.
The conference participants were greeted and wished fruitful work:
President of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Vitalii Tsymbaliuk; Francesca Racioppi, Head of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health; Jarno Habicht, Head of the WHO Country Office in Ukraine; and Mykhailo Rosada, Director General of the Center for Public Health.
The memory of the outstanding state, scientific, public figure, founder of the main scientific areas of environmental hygiene and public health, and the first director of the Institute, Oleksandr Marzieiev, was honored — the ceremony of laying flowers to the monument.
The first plenary session was opened by Nadiia Polka, the Institute’s director, with a report titled “Scientific Developments of the Marzieiev Institute for Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine on Prevention of the Negative Impact of the Consequences of Emergencies in Ukraine.” In it, she described in detail the Institute’s directions and scientific developments for 2022-2024.
There were seven presentations by participants from international organizations:
- Francesca Racioppi – Head of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health, Bonn, Germany;
- Dr. Elizabet Paunovic – The International HCH & Pesticides Association (IHPA), Serbian Toxicological Society, NEA, Consultant, Belgrade, Serbia;
- Professor Inga Prokopenko – Professor of e-One Health, Distinguished Chair, Head of Section of Statistical Multi-omics, Co-Director of People-centred AI Institute, University of Surrey, UK;
- Dr. Shindzo Kimura is an Associate Professor of Radiation Hygiene and International Epidemiology at Dokkyo Medical University, Japan;
- Catalina Croitoru – Associate Professor, «Nicolae Testemitanu» State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova;
- Elena Ciobanu – PhD, Associate Professor, «Nicolae Testemitanu» State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova;
- Maria Curtianu is a PhD student at «Nicolae Testemitanu» State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova.
Deputy Director of Scientific Work Olena Turos presented “Air pollution as a risk factor for non-communicable diseases.”
The first Plenary Session was devoted to the discussion of 27 reports covering the following issues: current challenges to the public health system, the impact of climate change on health, issues related to solving environmental problems and its effects on public health in modern conditions, with a special emphasis on the impact of the war on the environment and the identification of areas of scientific and practical activities for the restoration of Ukraine.
The conference consisted of two plenary sessions, during which 55 scientific reports were heard and discussed.
The second Plenary Session was held on October 25, 2024, at which 28 reports were heard. The reports were devoted to the priority areas of modern preventive medicine: sanitary and hygienic support of military personnel, hygiene issues of children and adolescents in the current conditions; hygienic aspects of nutrition; medical, environmental, and socio-economic determinants of health, congenital pathologies, malignant tumors, peculiarities of psychological care, medical care for victims of the Chornobyl accident, socio-hygienic monitoring, determination of genetic predisposition to psychoactive substance use.
Based on the conference results, Proceedings of the scientific and practical conference “CURRENT ISSUES OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY OF UKRAINE” were prepared and posted on the website.
