Summary:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The report provides an overall picture of the state of the environment and climate in Ukraine, including air quality, emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases, as well as the state of forests, soils and the marine environment. The analysis is based on the research of the European Joint Research Center (EU JRC) and other available scientific and statistical sources of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, this study systematizes data that allows us to assess the impact of the war on the environment and climate in Ukraine, and provides key benchmarks for the country’s recovery. At the same time, the report provides important information for assessing Ukraine’s readiness to join the EU, particularly in the context of Chapter 27 of the EU acquis’s environmental chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past decade, Ukraine has been actively working to adapt its environmental policy to EU standards, including through the formulation of strategic goals and the creation of a roadmap for participation in the European Green Deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The war, as well as the presence of military units and equipment, have significantly increased the risk of large-scale forest fires and made it much more difficult to monitor the environment and respond quickly to its changes. The hostilities have caused serious environmental damage, resulting in: toxic emissions, the presence of numerous unexploded ordnance sites and mined areas, destruction of natural habitats, deforestation, increased risk of fires, and damage to public health and biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conclusions presented in this report are intended to assist in the effective implementation of specific measures that are recommended to be considered in the planning process to ensure a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to the reconstruction of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
